Although the NSA affair is certainly a kind of background noise, it is not the theme of the exhibition. It is more a question of the ambiguity of the European (or German) view on the US, which is characterized by a still fascinating fascination for country and lifestyle on the one hand (New York, Florida or California remain places of desire) and fundamental criticism of the US policy on the other hand.
Shown are pictures, photos, collages and a 60 minute film. The thematic framework can be described with a number of names and terms: Elvis, George W. Bush, Michael Jackson, Jack Kerouac, 9/11, Graceland, Lowell/Massachusetts, the exorcist, lock and load, Pazuzu, Deathblow, Hatra, Babylon . . . . . . .
Because it is a small, fast-organized gallery exhibition, which is based on existing works by different artists, it remains associative and determined by coincidences.
And that the opening falls on the 4th of July, is a pretty punchline. |
